I have wanted to try my hand at making wall art with artist canvas for a looooong time. I finally got around to it this week. I love to try new mediums and this one intimidated me for some reason. Finally, I bought a big pack of canvases telling myself that if I messed up, it's ok because I could just toss one that didn't work and start again. The first one i did, I started pretty simple. I made this one of my husband and two boys. The picture was one from Father's day two years ago. I guess I really like this picture because my son pointed out that I have this snapshot hanging on a frame already! LOL! My daughter was on a Mission trip so she wasn't in this Father's day photo.
The canvas I was working with is an 11 x 14. I printed up an 8x10 Sepia tone photo. I first primed my canvas with a layer of Gesso. Next I painted 3 complimentary colors - a brown, cream, and light yelllow , over the whole canvas. Once that was dry I used royal coat(like mod podge) to adhere the designer paper from Elegant Suite paper pack. I die cut a scallop strip from Early Espresso cardstock from the new Tasteful Trim Sizzix die from the Stampin' Up! Holiday mini. This die is quickly becoming a favorite! I used royal coat to adhere that as well. I matted the photo in Early Espresso and used royal coat on the back and coated a layer over the top as well. Next I die cut the letters from Stampin' Up!'s Sizzix Alphabet Simple letters in Early Espresso. I used the new adhesive sheets from the Holiday mini to adhere the letters. This adhesive is a great deal! You get twelve 12 x 12 adhesive sheets for only $14.95. This will take the place of the xyron for sure! I adhered the adhesive sheet to the back of my cardstock and then die cut the letters. Then I just peeled back the other layer and stuck the letters down on my project! So easy! I coated them with royal coat and I was done!
My next project was a little bit more labor intensive but I LOVE the result! Again, I started off with coating my canvas with a layer of Gesso. Once that was dry I dabbed the whole canvas with my Taken with Teal craft ink(sadly, this color is retired). That didn't fully cover the canvas so I painted over that with a layer of acrylic paint. Once that was dry I went over the whole canvas with mod podge with glitter built right into, Love this stuff! Once that was dry I took this fun picture of my daugther and one of her best friends and framed it in designer paper from Stampin' Up!'s retired Rock-a-billy designer paper. My daughter went to a sweet 16 masquerade party last year so that's where this fun photo came from. I coated the back and top with royal coat. The letters are the Stampin' Up! Sizzix simple alphabet letters(the same ones I used on my first project). But this time I die cut them with chipboard. I dabbed the chipboard in craft white ink, sprinkled heat and stick powder and heated it to make it sticky. I poured the new champagne glass glitter over the top and heat set it. This glass glitter is gorgeous and can be found in the new Holiday mini! Because the glitter is so chunky though it didn't cover the entire letter so I squirted some liquid glue over the gaps and sprinkled dazzling diamonds glitter over that. This was a putzy process but the results were so worth it!!! The final touch was to add some flowers on the side that I had in my stash. They are pretty dimensional so they would be tough to use on a traditional scrapbook page but just right for this 3d wall art!
This one's going in my daughter's room. I had so much fun making these! i see many more of these in my future! I hope you enjoyed them too. Let me know what you think!
Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy your day!
